Programme Three

Gender & Youth Empowerment

Promoting gender equality and equity, nurturing youth potential, and building mentally healthy communities across Nairobi and Kiambu Counties — through inclusivity, advocacy, and transformative capacity building.

Programme Overview

Inclusivity at the heart of change

The Gender & Youth Empowerment Program promotes gender equality and equity among communities within Nairobi and Kiambu Counties. The Program recognises inclusivity as a key aspect and advances it through gender mainstreaming, advocacy, and capacity building.

This includes creating awareness, sensitisation campaigns, lobbying, networking, and linkages — addressing the interconnected challenges of gender inequality, youth vulnerability, and mental health across communities.

"Inclusivity at the heart of every intervention — advanced through gender mainstreaming, advocacy, and capacity building."

What We Address

Key Challenges

Three interconnected challenges that the programme responds to across Nairobi and Kiambu communities.

Gender Inequality

Gender inequality manifests across communities in various forms — higher poverty and unemployment rates among men and women, and increasing cases of gender-based violence and child abuse within families and charitable centres.

Youth Challenges

Youth form the largest population in the ADN communities yet face high unemployment, drug and substance abuse, irresponsible sexual behaviours exposing them to HIV/AIDS, and rising teenage pregnancies.

Mental Health Crisis

Increasing cases of mental illness reflect a broader global trend. Urbanisation stress, socioeconomic factors, stigma, trauma, and substance abuse all contribute to high rates of crime, radicalisation, suicides, and early pregnancies.

Mental Health Project

Akili Afya

The Akili Afya project raises awareness of mental health issues and supports access to mental health information and services. We work with the Ministry of Health and a network of partners across Nairobi and Kiambu to bridge the gap between communities and quality mental health care.

Increasing cases of mental illness are deeply connected to urbanisation stress, socioeconomic pressures, stigma, trauma, and substance abuse — and are reflected in rising rates of crime, radicalisation, and suicide. Akili Afya addresses this at the community level.
