Programme Two

Food Security & Livelihoods

Empowering communities to grow food, earn sustainable incomes, and build dignified, self-reliant futures through innovative agriculture and market-focused solutions.

Programme Overview

Transforming challenges into opportunity

Across Nairobi and Kiambu Counties, families face daily challenges of food insecurity, limited income opportunities, and the effects of climate change. Caritas Nairobi's Food Security and Livelihood Programme is transforming these challenges into opportunities.

Through innovative agriculture and market-focused solutions, the programme places farmers, youth, and women at the heart of change — empowering communities to grow food, earn sustainable incomes, and build dignified, self-reliant futures.

"Growing Hope, Nourishing Communities, Building Futures."

Our Initiatives

Three Projects, one mission

Three complementary interventions turning food insecurity, land scarcity, and low farm incomes into pathways for dignity and self-reliance.

Brewing Prosperity Through Coffee
1
Right Coffee Project

Githunguri Highlands — Supported by AICS

Brewing Prosperity Through Coffee

In the highlands of Githunguri, coffee farming is more than a tradition — it is a lifeline. Through the Right Coffee Project, Caritas Nairobi is revitalising coffee farming for 200 smallholder farmers and over 7,500 households in Gititu and Mikari Cooperatives.

Farmers are gaining practical skills to improve coffee quality and yields, accessing disease-resistant seedlings, and strengthening cooperative leadership. Youth and women are stepping into new roles in coffee processing, branding, and value addition — turning coffee waste into opportunity.

Smart Hydroponic Farming

Limuru & Mukuru — Supported by Missio München & UMR

Farming Without Soil, Feeding Urban Families

In the crowded urban settlements of Limuru and Mukuru, land is scarce — but innovation is thriving. The Smart Hydroponic Farming Project is equipping 151 youth and women with hands-on skills in hydroponic and greenhouse farming.

Using a demonstration farm in Limuru, participants learn how to grow nutritious food in small spaces using climate-smart technology. The result is healthier households, new livelihood pathways, and young people empowered with skills that meet today's urban food challenges.

Dairy Unit Extension Programme

Limuru & Lari — Dairy Farmers Programme

Stronger Herds, Stronger Incomes

For dairy farmers in Limuru and Lari, improved milk production means school fees paid, meals on the table, and a more secure future. The Dairy Unit Extension Programme supports over 2,000 farmers with modern dairy practices, breed improvement through artificial insemination, and access to quality feeds and veterinary services.

By partnering with local milk transporters and agents, the programme ensures reliable market access, collecting an average of 11,000 litres of milk daily and translating productivity gains into stable household incomes.
